Light and Darkness

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

"In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. He was with God at the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." John 1:1-5

"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." John 3:19-21

"The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light." Romans 13:12.

Here's something worth musing about: until God spoke light into existance, there was no created thing that was described as "good." Darkness and hate are absencess, lacks, and nullities. Perhaps they are non-existant defaults. It is light that has substance - darkness is the absence of light. It is active love which is real - hate is - at best - a parasite to the reality of love.

C.S. Lewis, in "The Great Divorce", sees hell as trivial and insignificant, almost unsubstantial, compared to heaven. I always liked that idea.
